Production Designers: Steve Groves, John Asbridge & Linda Conoboy

For the BBC Project Carolina, based at the former BBC Elstree Centre, I was tasked with recreating the entire Elstree site in SketchUP. The model was used extensively throughout project documentation and in presentations to stakeholders, providing a clear and accurate visual reference for the proposed redevelopment.

As part of the E20 Programme at the former BBC Elstree Centre, I was responsible for producing a series of handover documents for the new EastEnders Albert Square set, known as the Front Lot. The base model was created in SketchUP before being labelled, organised, and formatted in Microsoft Visio for final issue.

As the design of the new EastEnders external set developed, several additions were required to help mask existing structures. I produced an initial SketchUP model using the architectural information available at the time, incorporating new backdrop elements based on archive drawings.

As the design of the new EastEnders external set evolved, several additions were required to help mask existing structures. I produced an initial SketchUP model using the architectural information available at the time, incorporating new backdrop elements from archive drawings as well as the revised termination point on Turpin Road.

The SketchUP model above illustrates the initial design intent for a new structure incorporating a TfL Overground Station (right), a Supermarket (front), and a Coffee Shop (left). Due to budgetary constraints, the scope was significantly reduced and the scheme required a full re‑design.

The Coffee Shop interior was developed to provide ample space for the EastEnders Production team, incorporating truckable flattage and camera traps. The initial model was created in SketchUP before being taken into AutoDesk AutoCAD for the final drawing package.

The following images show the final intent for the internal layout and decoration. Painted brick slips were used on sections of the walls, paired with stained timber to create a warm and comfortable atmosphere within the space.

These final shots indicate potential locations for dressing and furniture. This detailed model was created in SketchUP.
